Staff Backend Engineer, Billing at Airwallex. Lead the design and delivery of a next-generation global billing platform focused on pricing, invoicing, and payments. Own architecture, scalability, reliability, and cross-functional collaboration across teams in Shanghai and Singapore to empower customers with seamless billing experiences.
Qualification
- 5+ years of backend software engineering experience with a track record of building distributed systems or billing-related platforms.
- Proficiency in at least one major backend language (e.g., Java, Go, Python) and strong experience building APIs and microservices.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (preferably AWS), containerization (Docker), and container orchestration (Kubernetes); familiarity with CI/CD practices.
- Strong SQL and data modeling skills with experience in relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and SQL optimization.
- Domain knowledge of payments, pricing, invoicing, revenue recognition, and tax handling; awareness of PCI and data privacy considerations.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills; proven ability to lead, mentor, and influence across cross-functional teams and time zones.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent practical experience); data-driven, initiative-taking, and solution-focused mindset.
Responsibility
- Design, implement, and scale billing services covering pricing, invoicing, discounts, refunds, and tax handling to support global customers.
- Own end-to-end delivery of billing features from concept to production, ensuring high availability, performance, and security.
- Architect and evolve microservices APIs (REST) and data models for billing, ensuring strong data consistency and fault tolerance.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (GTPN, PA, Scale, Issuing, Spend) across geographies to align on pricing and billing capabilities and drive end-to-end automation.
- Improve observability and reliability through metrics, logging, tracing, monitoring, and robust CI/CD pipelines.
- Mentor and lead engineers, promoting engineering excellence, code quality, and best practices; contribute to roadmap and technical direction.
- Partner with Product and Data teams to implement flexible pricing strategies and billing workflows while ensuring compliance with regulatory and security requirements.
